BEST NEW BUSINESS
Majeda Clarke
Textile Designer & Weaver
Majeda Clarke, a textile designer specialising in weave, has won the Best New Business Award category at the UK Bangladesh Catalysts of Commerce & Industry (UKBCCI) Inaugural Business & Entrepreneur Excellence Awards 2016 and Gala Dinner.
Held at the London Hilton Park Lane on Sunday 20th November, the glittering awards ceremony saw Majeda win the award in the presence of over 800 guests, made up of dignitaries, VIPs, MPs and prominent members of the business community.
Majeda’s work highlights the geometry of weave and playing with strong colour inspired by her own cultural background, Majeda brings a modern aesthetic to an ancient craft and works closely with local weaving communities such as the UNESCO Jamdani weavers of Dhaka, renewing ancient techniques. Majeda’s mill woven pieces explore a lost weaving heritage, at Silk Mills in Suffolk or the Woolen Mills in Pembrokeshire.
The heritage of these mills can be traced back generations. Currently a Clothworkers’ Awardee, Majeda has previously won several awards and competitions including Bemz for IKEA, Heals and The SDC Judges Highly Commended Award for colour. She has exhibited at the London Design Festival and The Aram Gallery, building up a business of considerable repute.
