Rushanara Ali, MP
Rushanara Ali is the Labour Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow. She was first elected in May 2010 with a majority of 11,574, having defeated George Galloway’s Respect Party. Rushanara was re-elected in 2015 doubling her majority to 24,317 and in 2017, increased her majority again to 35,393.
Rushanara has served as Shadow Minister for Education and Young People, and between October 2010 and October 2013, as Shadow Minister for International Development. Rushanara has previously
served as a member of the Treasury Select Committee and the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee and the Communities and Local Government Select Committee. Rushanara has recently
been elected once again to the Treasury Committee. Rushanara was appointed the UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Bangladesh in 2016.
Prior to her election in May 2010, she was Associate Director of the Young Foundation, where she co-founded UpRising, a national leadership development and employability charity which has helped
thousands of young people develop their campaigning and leadership skills. Rushanara has also recently created One Million Mentors, a national online platform to recruit, train and deploy mentors to organisations working with young people.
